The organic industry is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more people are hoping to put quality foods into their bodies. However, not everyone may have access to organic vegetables or local farmers markets. Money may be even more of an issue as organic products may be double or triple the price of regular produce and meat. Apart from the money or availability of organic produce, let's consider the "clean 15" or those vegetables that don.t need to be bought organically.
Below is the list of the Clean 15. These vegetables have been known to need little to no pesticides or herbicides during their growth, as they are more resistant to bugs and disease. Factors like the outside of the fruits or vegetables (peel, rind or skin) help to protect them from bugs and disease. Growth conditions and habits are also other things that help to prevent disease and fungus.
So next time you would like to save some $ at the store and get to eat some wholesome veggies, put these in your cart!
GMO's or organic...which should it be?
The debate is ongoing and you should be informed about what kind of pesticides and chemicals you put into your body. Lets just get to the heart of the matter, organic or GMO (Genetically Modified Organism)- ALL use chemicals to have them grown. You can debate it all day long, but really, you just need to do your research on it. You will be amazed by how many chemicals are utilized for "organic" crops. After all, for something to be TRULY organic, no chemicals can be utilized during any part of the process! If this were the case, produce would be extremely expensive and not as plentiful. A cow cannot even feed on grass that was fertilized if they are using their manure for soil amendment...
GMOs can be genetically modified by grafting two species together or having two species crossbreed through seed/pollen, etc.- therefore, GMOs don't need to have all the negative press. They have also been engineered to withstand drought and insects that tear them up. Just because a crop has been coined as a "GMO" doesn't mean that it is coated with chemicals.
So, for all of you who do care about which crops are sprayed the most, a list is below. They are known as "the dirty dozen." These colorful fruits and veggies are often destroyed by insects and diseases and must be sprayed more than other crops.
So, if you are going to buy anything organic- these are recommend:
A good rule of thumb for buying produce: If it has soft skin or leafy surface, bugs like it just as much as people do. This mandates a more rigorous spraying schedule.
Of course everyone knows that the best diets are comprised of "plenty of fruits and vegetables." So lets think about another reason why we should eat these colorful foods...
