Why You are Failing in Your Fitness Endeavors
By Brian Vernetti
Life is funny sometimes, well, most of the time. It is full of curveballs that take us by surprise, sleep schedules get messed up, family comes into town, holidays come and go, the ball game gets delayed or cancelled, you get injured... the list is endless about how life can have its up and downs no matter the time of year.
No matter what time of year it is or what events are going on, we almost always have the thought in the back of our minds that we would like to look better than we do now. When we turn to Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms, we are bombarded with near-perfect physiques of men and women and the crazy workouts they do. We daydream about what life would be like to have six-pack abs, toned arms, thighs and a nice butt…and then crash back into reality. “How did they do it?” or “I can’t be like!” may be some thoughts that may consume your thinking when seeing these profiles and videos. Even if you don’t want six-pack abs but just to be more healthy, the task can still seem to be daunting and self-defeating when addressed with all the social media.
This is where the first method of failure comes in
You “want” something you don’t REALLY want
Anyone can say that they want to lose weight or “be like that guy.” It’s easy. It’s a verbal statement that is taken lightly amongst society today. While I have mentioned intrinsic (internal) motivation in prior posts, this one is based off of your true examination of self. Do YOU really WANT it, or are you just going to talk about it? We all want a lot of things, but what are we going to do to get those things?
To be successful when starting and continuing your journey to a healthier life, you MUST have an internal motivation that pushes you when life doesn’t present a perfect set of circumstances (almost never). You have to want a healthier heart, you have to want a healthier body, you have to want to be there for your family, you have to want to be better during those pick-up basketball games...you really need to WANT it. If you don’t really want something, it will be short-lived.
The second of method of failure
You base your journey on how you FEEL
If I based my life and working out on how I felt all the time, I would never work out. I would always eat garbage foods, I would watch TV all day and become like much of everyone else society. You cannot base a healthy lifestyle upon your feelings. If you do, you will never succeed in your fitness endeavors. It sounds harsh, but when its early in the morning, cold outside, your day isn’t going the way you want it to or you just “don’t feel like working out,” that is the perfect time to take control and destroy those things in life that may be holding you back! If you let life's feelings control you this time, it has better chances of controlling you in the future! Be a conqueror and plow through those feelings of laziness, doubt and ineffectiveness! Feelings are controlling in many aspects of our lives, but would you rather have a feeling of accomplishment and self-worth or defeat and low self-esteem? That’s what I thought- we all want to accomplish things and be better, so take those steps to success day in and day out.
So, if you want to succeed in becoming healthier, lift more weight, running longer and faster, you need to WANT it deep down inside and GO FOR IT, no matter how you are feeling or the circumstances surrounding you! The struggles of this life are quick to bring us down, so let’s keep the finish line in our minds and strive for it each and every day. Its not only the best thing for you, but for your loved ones as well.
